Paraspinaltherapy in the Neck area

Explanations were given in previous articles about triggerpoints.in this article will be explained about the relief of Cramps in the neck and shoulder area, which are mostly found in behind desks sitters and people who spend many hours in front of their personal computer during day.

at first, we will discuss the importance of paraspinal therapy in this area and how to relieve cramps caused by inactivity and long sitting and bad posture. You cant find aperson who has desk job or office work which has not experienced pain in neck or shoulder. The human,s head weights is normally between 4.5 to 5.5 kg, and by changing the angle of the head and much bending in forward, this weight or the pressure on the neck increases. It can be interpreted one of the most common causes of neck pain is the pressure that applied to the muscles and ligaments of the neck, due to the imperior position of the head in shoulder.

According to studies and researches, people who state at their mobile phone for significant hours during day ( between 4 bis 5 hours) taking the weight of the head, about 12 kilograms, if the neck is bending forwards only about 15 degrees and it put double pressure on the spine. But usually, when people look at their mobile phone, they have greater angel, about 60 degrees and this means applying the weight of 27 kilograms to the spine and neck, which can causes severe damage to the joints in this area.

Bad Posture

Here is short explanation about bad Posture for you. In general meaning, the shape of the human body is called posture. Bad posture happend when the body state for along time in unnormal situation. Due to a chang in the state of the joints and body,s muscles tissues, the spine changes to an unusual state. The reason for this is improper daily habits including long sitting at the desk or lounding on the sofa and watching tv for long time, which causes the spine to be in an unusual shape for long hours in the long run. This causes muscle pains  and then joint pains and finally spine problems and bad posture.

Fixing Triggerpoints in Clavicular & Sternal portion

The weight of the head and it,s rotational and static movement is mostly on the sternocleidomastoid muscles and scalenes or ladder muscles. Rotational and circular movement and head up and down movement is done with the help of these muscles. The Triggerpoints in the scallions and back of the neck cause reflex pain or referral pains. ( it was explained about referral pains  in previous articles) these pain are generally felt in the back of the neck, in the scalene area and sometimes above the chest or clavicular, which generally lead to headaches and pain in the back and upper area. The head, around the eyes, ears and behind the ears are reflected.

In the previous article was explained about Whiplash, the whipping movement of the head forward. This condition can also potentially cause reflex pain in the head and neck area.

Paraspinal Therapy in the Neck area

As explained before, the first step to resolve triggerpoints is Paraspinal therapy. For this purpose, by using Friction movements( with one hand) or petrisage ( with two hand) next to the first four vertebrae in the neck area ( Atlas, Acetabulum and two lower vertebrae) slowly work on the patient with static movements for maximum 30 seconds to one minute. For this target, first we ask the patient to sit in front of us on the chair then you start therapy with friction movement( one hand ) or petrisage ( two hand) , press the side of the first four vertebrae of the neck.

As the nerves related to the desired triggerpoints, the massage transferred to the Brain from these four vertebrae. This movement stimulates and sends a nerve messege to the corresponding  point in the brain and prepares the brain to improve the pain in the treated area with the release of endorphin hormones. Then we work on the desired nerve. To create a stretching movement on the nerve of the relevent muscles, we ask the patient to sit on a chair and open his/her legs as much as shoulder width. Then make a fist on the side of the treatment and hold it in front of you so that the thumb is facing up and the fist is parallel to the ground.

Then we ask the patient to slowly pull the head forward and the shoulder on the treatment  side back by creating tension and  then pull the head in the same position to the opposite side. Repeat this movement 5 to 10 times. Then apply pressure with your fingertips on the points where the patient feels pain, for 30 second to a minute. Repeat this movement 5 to 10 times to stimulate the triggerpoints. Finally slowly lengthen and shorten the neck muscles by turning the head towards the treatment and against it. Repeat these gentle movments up to 5 times to relive the pain of the triggerpoints.

In the next article will be explained about pain of other parts of body.
